Excerpts from The New Testament Reference Guide

Using the Lists

Why assemble a list of The Commandments of Jesus and The Requirements of the New Testament? They are clearly given in the Bible for anyone to read; and devoted Christians, who obviously have the greatest need for knowing them, usually read the New Testament often.

Quite simply, the requirements it advances are not given in an orderly fashion. The commandments of Jesus are scattered through the four versions of the Gospel narrative; and the requirements propounded in the remaining books are given by various writers under circumstance and anecdote of their ministerial lives. Moreover, many of the requirements are repeated or given in differing sequences and shades of meaning, making it difficult for the student to identify, locate, and study a particular requirement.

Therefore, what has been recorded in these two lists are the commandments (or requirements) given in the New Testament, from Matthew to Revelation, which do or can pertain to the required conduct, belief, and behavior of the Christian believer. However, only clearly stated theological requirements have been recorded; but passages used by particular denominations to advance a required belief have not.

The Commandments of Jesus list is identified with a capital J following the given entry number; whereas The Requirements of the New Testament list is identified with a lower case n. The purpose of the letters is to make identifying the list immediate. All one must do to know whether the requirement being examined was given by Jesus or one generally given in the New Testament is to look at the entry number: J for Jesus and n for New Testament. In this way, the student will not have to look to the beginning of the list.

Some of those entered in The Requirements of the New Testament list have also been taken from Revelation, but very few from the Gospels. With the exception of God’s admonition to listen to his Son at Jesus’ baptism and the few words of John the Baptist, all of the requirements of the Gospels are given directly from the person of Jesus. Thus, the requirements of the Gospels are primarily the commandments of Jesus.
